U.S. U-20 Women Take CONCACAF Championship

January 30, 2010: The U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team defeated Mexico again on late goal by Sydney LeRoux. Sydney scored her tournament-leading sixth goal in the 87th minute to give the U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team a 1-0 victory over Mexico and the title at the 2010 CONCACAF U-20 Women’s Championships.

Both teams had already qualified for the 2010 FIFA Women’s World Cup by virtue of semifinal victories two days ago, but Mexico’s performance was outstanding.  The U.S. broke through a very strong defense with less than three minutes to play in regulation and appropriately it was Leroux who bagged the game-winner.

Leroux, who was also the top scorer at the 2008 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Chile, tallied in four out of five matches the USA played in Guatemala, with her final goal worthy of a tournament winner.

In the third place match Canada succumbed to Costa Rica 1-0, which will be in the U-20 World Cup for the first time.  Canada will not make the trip to Germany.

Highlights of these games can be viewed on the CONCACAF website.

WPS Comings and Goings

January 8, 2010:  The Bay area FC Gold Pride made a big move to acquire France's Camille Abily.  Abily had eight goals and one assist while teamed with Marta, the four-time FIFA player of the year, while playing for the L.A. Sol last season. The 24-year-old attacking midfielder should fill the void left by Leslie Osborne, who departed for Boston.

The Bay Area team sent midfielder Tina DiMartino, the third overall pick in the 2009 Women's Professional Soccer league draft, and the 14th selection in next week's draft to Los Angeles. The Gold Pride, which still has the No. 3 and No. 10 overall picks in this year's draft, also received the 20th slot from Los Angeles.

January 5, 2010:  Former consensus All-American and 2007 MAC Herman Trophy winner Mami Yamaguchi signed a professional contract with the Atlanta Beat.

Atlanta General Manager Shawn McGee announced the signing of the Japanese international Jan. 1st, when she was selected third by the Beat in the 2009 WPS International Expansion Draft.

December 10, 2009:  Norway's Gulbrandsen signed with FC Gold Pride, the first Norwegian player in the WPS.

Gold Pride Coach Albertin Montoya said, "We are excited to welcome Solveig and her family to the Pride.  Through the years, Gulbrandsen has asserted herself as one of Scandinavia's most respected players and one of Norway's most talented playmakers and finishers.   Her experience, skills and leadership will help our team immensely.  She is a great fit for our team system and our organization."  He scouted her at the recent UEFA Championship games in Finland.

November 17, 2009:  The Atlanta Beat signed midfielder Stacey Bishop from the Boston Breakers.  "Stacy is quite versatile.” Beat Head Coach Gareth O’Sullivan stated. “I saw her play for Boston last season, and she has some strong attacking qualities. We are looking to use her as more of a holding midfielder although she does give us many options going forward.”

Bishop said, “This really means a lot to me, and I realize that it is a special opportunity."  "This is something I always dreamed of doing as a kid, so it’s pretty amazing to be able to do it for a living.”

November 3, 2009:  Goalie Allison Whitworth has been traded from the FC Gold Pride to the Atlanta Beat in exchange for the 10th and 12th overall 2010 draft picks.  It is the Gold Pride's first trade of the year.

September 22, 2009:  The Philadelphia Independence announced its selection of five international players, including Swedes Caroline Seger and Charlotte Rohlin, Brits Lianne Sanderson and Fara Williams, and Icelander Holmfridur Magnusdottir.

Head Coach Paul Riley said, “I am delighted to say that today’s international selections, combined with the outstanding players we selected in last week’s WPS Expansion Draft, provide the Independence with excellent skill and experience in nearly every single position on the field. I can’t wait until the spring to show the Independence fans what I have seen in Europe from these players – their qualities and talents on the field are simply unreal!"

Atlanta Beat General Manager Shawn McGee announced their five international players acquired in Tuesday’s 2009 International Draft for Expansion Teams:  Ramona Bachmann, Johanna Rasmussen, Mami Yamaguichi, Maurine Dornelles Goncalves and Therese Sjögran.

Ramona Bachman is from Switzerland and was the second pick overall.  Bachman is a world renowned forward who had previously declined offers from both Germany and other WPS teams to spend another year with Swedish powerhouse, Umea IK. She has two Swedish Premier League titles with Umea, has twice appeared in the UEFA Women’s Cup Final, and was recently voted Player of the Year for Swiss Soccer.

Johanna Rasumussen is from Denmark and also appeared as a forward in the 2007 Women’s World Cup Final.

Mami Yamaguchi  is among the team from Umea and played against the WPS-All Stars in the final game of the WPS season.  She won a Swedish Championship gold medal with Umea in 2008 and has experience playing in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.  Yamaguchi starred at Florida State University and has played at various levels with the Japanese National Team.

Brazilian midfielder Maurine Dornelles Goncalves received the silver medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and was a gold medalist in 2007 Pan American Games. She also earned a bronze medal in the U-20 World Cup and plays for Brazilian club, Santos FC.

Swedish midfielder Therese Sjögran was named the Women’s Player of the Year for Sweden in 2007 and was awarded the Carlsberg Player of the Match award against Russia in the European Championships.
